Eleocharis vivipara also known as Hair grass is a species of flowering plant which belongs to family Cyperaceae, native to southern United States from eastern Texas to eastern Virginia. It has other common names such as: umbrella hair grass, sprouting spikerush, viviparous spikerush etc. This plant can grow submersed or emersed. This plant takes form of a clump of thin stems. Like other stem plants, it also requires light, nutrients, trace elements and sufficient CO2 (optional) to grow at its best. It is a prolific grower and will spread to all areas of the tank, so trimming is needed for maintaining its growth. It propagates by runners in the substrate. Separate larger mats into small portions then plant each an inch or so apart half way into the substrate. After several weeks, plant will send runners all around and a lush foreground of grass can be grown. It is one of the taller species, can grow upto 12 inches or can even grow more depending upon conditions. It belongs to Genus Eleocharis.
