Introduction: The Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) is a striking and peaceful freshwater fish highly sought after for its vibrant colors and graceful swimming.
Scientific Name: Phenacogrammus interruptus
Water Quality:
Feeding: Congo Tetras are omnivores and will readily accept high-quality flakes, pellets, and live/frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms.
Tank Mates: They are peaceful and social fish, making them compatible with other peaceful community species like other tetras, rasboras, and livebearers.
Substrates and Tank Decorations: A well-planted aquarium with driftwood and rocks to mimic their natural habitat is ideal for Congo Tetras. Use a sandy substrate to prevent damage to their delicate barbels.
Suitable Plants: Java fern, Amazon sword, and floating plants like water lettuce are excellent choices for providing hiding spots and enhancing the tank’s aesthetics.
Sexing: Males tend to have more vibrant colors, particularly during mating displays, while females may have a rounder belly.
Breeding: Create a separate breeding tank with soft, acidic water, and use plants or a spawning mop for them to lay eggs.
Maximum Size and Longevity: Congo Tetras can grow up to 3 to 4 inches (7 to 10 cm) and can live for 4 to 5 years under proper care.
General Information: The Congo Tetra originates from the Congo River Basin in Africa, and its stunning iridescent colors make it a prized addition to any peaceful community aquarium.
A Fun Fact: During courtship, male Congo Tetras display their vibrant colors and perform a dance to impress females, making them a fascinating species to observe.
