Assorted Angel Fish Profile – Care Sheet

The unique shape and majestic, clam, swimming style of Angel fish are just some of the reasons why this fish is one of the most popular of all aquarium fish. Angels do best in a deep tank of at least 40 centimetres high to accommodate their tail shape. Dark coloured backgrounds enable their fine colours to show through to their fullest extent. Ensure water conditions are set accordingly to the desired ranges for the angelfish and they appreciate a well-planted tank with lots of open swimming space.  Admired for their graceful swimming behavior, angelfish make stunning additions to large community aquariums.

Angel fish
Scientific Name
The Angel fish(Pterophyllum) is a angelfish belonging to the family Cichlidae.

Natural Range
Angelfish are native to a large area of tropical South America, including much of the Amazon River system. In their natural habitat, they are found almost exclusively in quiet, slow moving water.

Maximum Size and Longevity
Angel fish are capable of reaching the grand old age of 10 years and attain a length of between 15 to 25cm, depending on variety and size of tank.

Water Quality
Tolerates a wide range of water conditions but prefers soft slightly acid water.
Temperature: 25°C – 29°C
pH: 6.5 – 7.0
General Hardness: 50 – 150ppm

Feeding
Will eat most aquarium fish foods but they will thrive and be much more apt to breed on a greatly varied diet including some live, frozen or fresh food occasionally. Small size angels, at about 3 – 4 cm are still considered fry and require several feeds a day to keep them healthy and growing.

Compatibility
Angels are best kept in pairs or better still, small schools. Angels are generally peaceful however larger mature specimens may eat smaller fish such as neons.

Colour and Varieties
The eye is usually dark red, however many colour strains now have black eyes. The wild form body colour is silvery-white with 4 dark vertical bars running through it. Many colour strains have been developed by fish breeders around the world with blue, gold, marble, koi, blacks and other colour variations now available.

Sexing
When determining the difference between male and female angelfish, some aquartists look for the head shape. Female angelfish often have flat heads with eyes and noses that are in line with their foreheads. On the other hand, male angelfish often develop a raised bump, known as an enlarged crown, on their heads, and their nose and eye area sometimes form a ridge.

General Information
Angels will gladly eat up any fish small enough to fit in their mouths. So tiny 1 inch (2.5 centimeter) fish will end up being snacks when your angelfish become adults. Suitable tank mates include larger tetras and rasboras, gouramis, peaceful barbs, rainbowfish, corydoras and other medium-sized catfish. Angelfish are relatively hardy and can tolerate a decent range of water parameters. You can keep this fish even if you are a beginner.
